Growing up in a family with a medical background, Anqi was deeply drawn into the powerful contrast between the sense of precision in the medical field and the rawness of the unsettling visuals from surgeries. As Anqi’s interest in photography stemmed from these surgical images, her subject matter logically started with the human body with an anatomical nature. She is influenced by the work of Ana Mendieta and Ren Hang. At the early stage of her practice, Anqi juxtaposed distorted body parts and unsettling colors. The striking and yet disturbing photos raised the viewer’s awareness of the issue of gender inequality. Later, she turned the lens towards herself to reflect on her personal stories. In her work, Anqi uses the human body as a portal to channel internal emotion and invite the audience into her intimate experiences.
