Dealing with the complex traumas that resulted from witnessing loss and death both closely and frequently at a young age, my art has been an attempt to engage with somber subject matters and create work that is both true to its content as well as blissful to the audience. I aim to create mixed media bodies of work that are bright and visually appealing, while still carrying a subtle solemn tone throughout their content. I believe that part of my role as an artist is to find a way to visually articulate concepts and narratives that have little room in daily conversation– to break down complex ideologies which are typically not welcomed in the public sphere and direct my audience to engage, even subconsciously, with what my work is trying to speak about/for/with/against/in direction to.

My name is Cameron Van Horn and I have been a resident of the unceded Coast Salish territory throughout my life. As an interdisciplinary student-artist currently studying art and art history at the University of Washington in Seattle, I am in the midst of exploring as many mediums as I have access to in both the two-dimensional and three-dimensional realms. While my work continues to be rooted in an illustrative and graphic base, I use my passions for painting and printmaking to inspire the ornamentation of my sculptural content, connecting a distinctive style throughout most of my experiments. Much of my work conceptually tends to center around the human body and my own personal politics, ethics and relation to the world; which has currently been focused on my understanding/resistance of the American societal and cultural ideals I was raised with.
