I work in the realm of figurative abstraction, predominantly expressed in black pen and ink wash, or acrylic paint and collage. In my black pen and ink wash works, a human figure can be identified amongst organic leaf-like patterns. I use detailed linework to form the figures and their environment, contrasting natural curvature with stark cross-hatching as an amalgam of urban and organic experience. Up close, the figure appears to be a mere abstraction of line. A few steps back will allow the figure to announce itself. Through this visual experiment, I emphasize the ability and need to appreciate singular moments in human experience that should be savored and learned from, good or bad. Simple or complex. Then, it allows an opportunity to appreciate the broader, overarching apparatus of nature that gives birth to these fine grains of experience. My acrylic paint and collage work is meant to visually and physically facilitate a conversation between human figure, urban, and natural landscapes. I explore the different ways these subject matters express themselves as they are transferred unto, or through different materials, and how they can be fragmented and combined.
