Ruoxi’s art practice centers on observing traces of time that often go unnoticed. The concept of time has been a consistent interest in her practice, which she has viewed from multiple perspectives, often in relation to objects in her daily life. During the pandemic, Ruoxi observed time through the decay of fruit. Like human skin, fruit develops different appearances as it ages; unlike human skin, the changes in the fruit can occur by the second. When it comes to human skin texture, Ruoxi is not very confident about the big birthmark on her back, therefore, she is motivated to pursue ‘picture perfect’ in real life. In Picture Perfect, Ruoxi invites herself and audience members to enter the projection, to wear the fruit blemishes on their skin. Through audience interaction, Ruoxi thinks her artworks bring her and the world together, provoking imagination and speculating deeper consideration of everyday life.

Ruoxi Song was born and raised in the north of China and relocated to Washington with her family in 2017. Relocating was definitely a life-changing experience for Ruoxi, but it also opened doors to more variety and freedom.

Ruoxi realizes that she can freely express herself and her imaginations in the art world, that anything she makes is a reflection of her observations and experiences. Everyday objects are what Ruoxi is most interested in since they are what she has interacted with the most in her 20+ years of life. In that sense, Ruoxi is a life master, but it doesn’t affect her blow up the kitchen.

Additionally, Ruoxi has great interests in design. She aims to integrate empathy that art provides her and functions that the design concepts offer. In Ruoxi’s current work, she produces and self-publishes photography books by utilizing the skills she has learned in Photo/Media and Design.
